Shooting Smoke Tutorial

January 16th, 2009 by admin

flash tutorial

Many of you have asked how I and many others take pictures of Smoke. Here, I will walk you through how to do it.

So, what do you need?

Camera

External Flash/Bright Light

Incense Sticks (with a holder, a small glass will do)

Lighter/Match

Stool/Table

Tripod (optional but preferred)

Remote trigger (optional but preferred)

Macro Lens (For best results, but normal lens will do)

Black Background (Bigger the better eg. Studio bg, A2 Card, Black Sheet etc)

An Assistant (If you haven’t got a support for your Flash/Light source)

Got everything! Now What?

Ok, now you have everything that you need to start, you now need to set it all up! The diagram below shows how you should setup your kit. Also check out the picture for a clearer idea =] Place the flash/light source somewhere between the side and behind the smoke. The light needs to cover the area where the smoke might be, and it shouldn’t be so close that the smoke is unevenly lit. Also do not let the light flood onto the background.

Setup Your Camera on the tripod in the form of portrait (at a 90degree angle), this ensures you can capture as much smoke as possible. Set it up approximately 60cm’s away from the smoke (this will vary).

Brilliant! I’m all set up, what next?

Pre focus on the area where the smoke is going to be. I leave auto focus on. Try and keep a fast shutter speed, and an Aperture of between F11 and F16, also shoot at the lowest ISO setting you can (smoke is already quite noisy, so a higher ISO will make it worse). Also shoot in Raw if you can.

The Image Below should help with your settings (screen shot from a Canon 400d)

Light your Incense sticks (I Use two, the heat from one, effects the other and produces nice effects), and then blow out the flame, the smoke should now be flowing. Make sure that you have something to catch the ashes.

Now start focusing on the smoke and shoot…. LOTS. Keep checking the LCD and if its too dark either…. Increase the ISO, Reduce the F Number or slow the shutter Speed. Try to keep a healthy F number and a fast shutter speed. If the smoke seems undefined and dull, increase the flashes power (if you can).

Ive taken loads of shots and confident they are alright, what do I with them?

Now we need to process the images. Open up the selected Pictures raw file in your Raw editor and bring out the blacks to that the background is as dark as possible without losing the smoke. I personally like increasing the contrast, tweaking the brightness and playing with the highlights. It’s all about tweaking until you get the desired effect. Click Ok and open up your shot in Photoshop.

Create a new Layer. (Shift+Ctrl+N) and set the blending mode to Hue.

Then select the Gradient tool.

Select your colours and drag it across your image. Now is the time to experience with your pictures! If you want a white background, simply invert the image. (Image>>>Ajustments>>>Invert).

So thats the basic technique. Any questions, just contact me. Just remember, Saftey First and if you dont get it right first time, just try again another day!

Flash opens new windows and opportunities for game designers

January 14th, 2009 by admin

flash tutorial

Flash is an interactive platform that has a powerful design and animation tool along with a dynamic scripting engine, bitmap rendering, as well as advanced video and audio playback. There are three main aspects: the player, the file format, and the authoring tool/IDE. Flash games can be developed for websites, interactive TV, as well as handheld devices. There is no need to adopt multiple programming languages to build games.

It is the universal tool that permits the development of multimedia driven complex games. Games means fast, furious, efficient with rich graphics.

Flash enables developers to build the most popular games for online gamers. It just needs to support:

• Rich engaging graphics.• Smooth download of files from the net.• A playback device that can interpret downloads.

There are three main areas: design, development, and hosting.

The first step is creation of graphics. One must use Fireworks as well as Freehand for this aspect. The tools are compatible and fireworks allows the addition of Java script to images.

The game development will be done in Flash by importing graphics created in Freehand and Fireworks. The graphics are then placed in Director the parent tool of Flash.

The next part, hosting, uses a Web server. Dreamweaver MX is the tool that will create Web pages to host the game.

And, finally Action Script is used to provide enhanced functionality.

Advantages:

• Integrates almost all features needed for developing a game. It is a great interactive tool.• Can be used anywhere does not need additional software or plug ins.• It is Mac friendly.• Permits conversion from a full game to web version and vice versa.• Low cost and free to distribute. Licenses for decoders MP3 and Sorensen Spark are included.• Artists that can use flash easily are in plenty.• Flash delivers broadcast quality images over the Internet. • Permits embedding of game in power point for use in presentations. • Plenty of information as well as guidelines can be accessed as well as understood by all -tutorials, articles, as well as blogs.• The size of the game file remains small as the vector graphics and sound files are compressed.• Learning Flash language is easy.• Permits copy-paste to test components

There are traps one must be wary of and a few cons. Know the system well to maximize its use. There are plenty of tutorials inline that can be used as guides. Flash interface is ideally suited to both designer as well as developer, you can have fun while creating the game.

Flash is simple to use and a game can be developed in a few hours in a packaged form that can run on a PC, Mac, or Linux. One can make use of a browser or run the game as a stand alone.

Flash Keeps You Ahead in the Competitive Online Platform

January 13th, 2009 by admin

flash tutorial

The use of Flash in web site design has brought about a sea change in the way web sites are being developed today, a far cry from the static graphics and text heavy web sites of the yesteryears. With the help of this latest technology, a web site can now have its audio and visual content displayed creatively with much more appeal and impact .

In fact Flash web site templates have become a convenient and rather quick way to add a dash of glamour and attraction to any website. Flash templates not only serve as a readymade solution to have your web site look good and be up and running within a very short time, they help the web site grab the attention of the visitors, make them stay on the web site and explore it more deeply.

Flash web site design when used in combination with catchy and appealing content provides a polished and complete look to a website. But both the design elements and the content part must be complementary to each other. Flash templates are perfect for web sites which need to look trendy and classy such as web sites devoted to interior decor, music, beauty care products, software, electronic gadgets, design consultancies, photo galleries and so on.

Some key benefits of using Flash:

1. It helps in grabbing the attention of the visitor.

2. The marketing message of the web site is conveyed in a more effective and efficient manner.

3. Flash gives designers the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity in an innovative manner to come up with an appealing and interactive web site design.

4. Attractive flash designs help one to avoid jamming the web site home page with text. The moving images and effects are able to convey more information with less copy.

5. Flash is highly effective in designing tutorials, training courses, web based training modules and so on.

6. With Flash application, videos can be watched in a very convenient way without the requirement of any OS-dependent plug-ins.

7. To view flash, the required plug-ins can be downloaded and installed without any difficulty.

Even with so many benefits, one must take care not to go overboard with excessive use of Flash in web site designing. Too much use of Flash slows down the loading procedure of the web site. Moreover, terribly lengthy Flash movies become boring for the visitors.

Here are some points that must be kept in mind while designing a website with Flash.

1. The option to skip must always be provided so that users can skip the Flash movie if they wish to and directly proceed to browse the web site.

2. The text to be used in Flash movies must be used in HTML text format for better visibility in search engines.

3. Always include a loading bar in the Flash intro that indicates how much Flash has been downloaded.

4. Use HTML links for important web pages of your web site either on the top or the bottom of the Flash intro. This way the visitors can visit the other web pages they want to explore.

5. Put questions or some animated messages in order to keep the visitor engrossed till the Flash is downloaded.

6. Lastly use Flash only when it can add some extra attraction to the web site design and its overall purpose and not just for the sake of adding gimmicks.

How to Build a Flash Game – Flash Beginners Guide 101

January 4th, 2009 by admin

flash tutorial

Gaming is popular world wide and most people play games without knowing how a game is actually made. It takes inspiration, verve, technology, and more to create a game that captures the mind and heart of players all over the world.

The first step to making a game is to have a story. The story or plot is thought about and developed by game designers or players. Once the game is conceptualized, writers and artists work together on the storyboard and create sketches of the sequence with instructions for the technology team. The sketches are then scanned on to a computer and the next step is to breathe life into the story and characters.

Among the many ways to create a game a popular solution is Macromedia Flash MX. This allows the creation of rich, graphic and multimedia driven gaming. Flash has a player, authoring tool, and a file format. Flash allows game developers to use:

• Rich graphics.

• Create files that are user friendly and can be downloaded over the internet.

• Allows the import of graphic formats. This means designers can use Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, or Fireworks to develop the game as long as the graphics are vector.

• Flash lends itself to the creation of quality graphics that can be broadcast over the internet.

Flash can be used to create action, adventure, educational, first-person shooter, puzzle, sports, or role playing games.

The actual process of creating a game is complex but involves:

• Creating the characters. Sketches are fine tuned until they are perfect. These are then transformed into 3D characters. The figures are scanned into a computer and a digital skeleton is created. This is what defines the size, shape, and movements of any figure in a game.

• Next the programmers use Flash to bring movement and emotions into the figures of the game.

• Movement and characterization of the figures is followed by special effects and creation of the environment. Skies, clouds, wind, reflections, shadows, and more add mystery and atmosphere to the game. Flash allows developers to produce realistic and complex environments. It is the environment that gives life and motion to a game. The 3D effects are created using polygons along with texture mapping.

• This is followed by coding. Codes are instructions written by developers that lends intelligence to the game and drives a game forward. The more complex a code the more thrilling a game. Codes establish logic to a game and generate the excitement and uniqueness.

• Once the coding is done the testing begins. The testing helps the developer fine tune the game before it is marketed. This is when the game is rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. The rating indicates the appropriateness of the game for different age groups.

Flash is user friendly and therefore popular software with game developers. The World Wide Web offers Flash Tutorials for those interested in developing games. There are articles and tips and guidelines as well.

Free Cisco Ccna Tutorial

December 29th, 2008 by admin

flash tutorial

The basic boot sequence for a Cisco router is:

Step 1: The router performs a power-on self-test (POST) to discover and verify the hardware.

Step 2: The router loads and runs bootstrap code from ROM.

Step 3: The router finds the IOS or other software and loads it.

Step 4: The router finds the configuration file and loads it into running config.

All routers attempt all four steps each time that the router is powered on or reloaded. The POST code and functions cannot be changed by the router administrator. The location of the bootstrap code, the IOS to load, and the configuration file can be changed by the administrator-but you almost always use the default location for the bootstrap code (ROM) and for the initial configuration (NVRAM). So, the location of IOS or other software is the only part that typically is changed. Three categories of operating systems can be loaded into the router:

• The full-function IOS image, which is typically located in Flash memory but can also be located on a TFTP server. This is the normal, full-feature IOS used in production; • A limited-function IOS that resides in ROM; and provides basic IP connectivity when Flash memory is faulty and you need IP connectivity to copy a new IOS into Flash memory. This limited-function IOS is called RXBOOT mode.

• A different non-IOS operating system that is also stored in ROM. This operating system, called ROM Monitor (ROMMON) mode, is used for low-level debugging and for password recovery. Unless you are performing password recovery, you would seldom use ROMMON mode.

The configuration register tells the router whether to use a full-featured IOS, ROMMON, RXBOOT mode. The configuration register is a 16-bit software register in the router, and its value is set using the configregister global configuration command. The boot field is the name of the low-order 4 bits of the configuration register. This field can be considered a 4-bit value, represented as a single hexadecimal digit. If the boot field is hex 0, ROMMON is loaded. If the boot field is hex 1, RXBOOT mode is used. For anything else, it loads a full-featured IOS.

Bootable USB Flash Drives and How to Create Them

December 29th, 2008 by admin

flash tutorial

A USB flash drive is thought to be a much better alternative than a floppy disc or a CD. It can be dropped or scuffed without being damaged due to the durable outer shell. They are also portable and can be placed anywhere, from your key chain to your pocket. The storage possibilities are endless and many people do not even use the whole amount that is available on the USB flash drive.

When the USB flash drive was first introduced by IBM, they were as simple in colour as they were in style and memory storage. You are now able to purchase one in any colour of the rainbow and any size of memory that you desire. The price that you pay will depend on how much storage the removable device has.

Not only does a USB flash drive save paper, but you can have all of your important programs at your fingertips no matter which computer you are sat at.

The technical words for USB are a “Universal Serial Bus” device. Making a bootable USB flash drive is not as easy it may look. It is much harder than making a bootable disc or a floppy disc. A bootable USB flash drive can come in handy, but creating one could cause you to become very stressed out. A bootable USB flash drive simply means that you can upload important programs to a computer from your removable memory storage device, or as we know it the USB.

The following are directions for a Windows computer:

Your first step should be to download and install the Windows Automated Installation Kit. This also contains Windows PE 2.0.

Open a command and execute the following:

- There should be a list of disks with information about each one. Select disk 1, assuming that the USB key is disk 1. This has to be correct or you could accidentally erase the hard drive instead.

- Clean or remove any information from the disk and create a partition primary.

- Select partition 1 and use format fs=fat32. You will then exit.

Your next step is to setup and customize Windows PE with the following steps:

- Click on the Windows Start menu, open “All Programs”, and then the Windows AIK program folder. Select and click “Windows PE Tools Command Prompt”. Run command: Copype.cmd x86 c:winpe_x86.

Insert the USB flash drive into the computer and run the following command to copy WinPE and its contents to the USB flash drive: xcopy c:winpe_x86iso*.* /s /e /f e:

A bootable USB flash drive also makes it easy to cancel out an old computer and switch in a new one. You do not have to have a boot disk if you have a bootable USB flash drive.

There are many tutorials out there that can help you to create a bootable flash drive; some are more successful than others.

The bottom line is that after you have created this, you will be able to boot all of your regular programs from an advanced menu. Plus you can still use your USB flash drive on any computer that you wish.
